This Week at Alta Vista: Check out what's happening in ... Lead Teacher: Gessi Romero Wiese Aide: Sophie Koshland The Week of February 21st Welcome to another brain stretching week in first grade! After an exciting last few weeks of investigating simple machines, our budding scientists will wrap up the unit with some final investigations and experiments. In Math students will continue to work with identifying, adding and subtracting combinations of coins and bills as well as continue to practice their multiplication and division skills. In Language arts/wordwork students will work on recognizing and using parts of speech. They will make books and identify nouns in their reading as well as make a list of nouns for use in their writing. On Tuesday, February 28th, Alta Vista will host a "No Water" day. On this day our community will honor water as a precious resource. Students will discuss the scarcity of clean water around the world and the difficulty some communities have to go through to get any water at all. Students will also think of ways in which we can all do our part to help conserve it. In order to get a feel for what it is like not to have easy access to clean water students will follow the procedures below when getting a drink or using the restrooms. The water fountain at the top of the stairs will be shut down. Students wishing to have a drink of water will get a bucket from the end of the hallway by the JK room and carry the bucket to the area just outside the office. A water cooler and small Dixie cups will be available for them to use for drinking water. Once they finish drinking water they will return their bucket to the end of the hall and return to class. There will be a tally sheet in the bathroom. Students should make a tally mark every time the toilet is flushed both the upstairs toilet and those downstairs. Thank you and we look forward to another fun and engaging week! Love, Gessi and Sophie Homework Monday Go to this website http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/math.htm and scroll down until you get to the dollars and cents section called “identifying money amounts”. How many times did the dishwasher run? How many showers or baths did everyone take? How many times did you flush the toilet? Wednesday Read aloud with your family for at least fifteen minutes. Talk about the book you read. What happened in the beginning, middle and end? What was the setting? Was there a problem the characters solved? Thursday Cut out and play the addition “Mathonimos” game you took home today with someone at home. Keep them in your math tool kits.
