The Week of December 9th
It was wonderful to come back to our classroom and see all of our students after a week off. Students wasted no time jumping back into Kindergarten with their usual excitement and eagerness to learn. This week was extra special as we welcomed a new student, Ana Sofia, into our classroom community. Her family just moved here from Portland, and students could not wait to greet her, show her around, and teach her all about our classroom routines.
This week in Science, our Kindergarten scientists impressed us with their seemingly natural sense of inquiry and ability to identify and experiment with various variables. Next week, we will continue our exploration on What is a Scientist? in which, we will focus on breaking down and isolating the steps of The Scientific Method such as, asking questions, forming reasonable hypotheses using background knowledge, and doing LOTS of fun experiments. Students will practice making and recording observations on these experiments, drawing conclusions, and asking even more questions.
In Math this week, we will continue building fluency with 10 Friends by playing lots of math games. Students made memory cards this week with numbers 0-10 and their matching 10 Friend. Next week, students will get a chance to play Ten Friends Memory among other math games like Tens Go Fish.
Last week, we launched our cross-grade Kindergarten Reader’s Workshop with great success. Students enjoyed the chance to work with friends and teachers from both Kindergarten classes, and were very proud of their reading! This week, students will continue to practice reading and using various decoding strategies in their differentiated reading groups by reading books at their instructional and independent level. In Writing, this week we will continue studying Arnold Lobel and his stories about Frog and Toad. We will study the characters of Frog and Toad and compare them using a Venn Diagram.
On Tuesday December 10, we will celebrate our Winter Festival with a holiday concert in the gym at 4:00 pm. Attire for this concert is "holiday festive." If your child would like to bring his or her outfit to change into before the concert please send it in a labeled bag with your child on Tuesday morning.
On Thursday December 12, we will be going on our field trip to see The Velveteen Rabbit. We are looking very forward to experiencing this performance with the children. Please do not order Choice Lunch for your child on this day. Each child will need a lunch and snack sent in a disposable bag. Thank you for your help with this task.
This week will be our last week of Current Event presentations with Harper presenting on Tuesday. Thank you all for helping your child prepare for, practice, and present his or her Current Event. Our class will have another opportunity to present Current Events in a few months.
